In 1878, Tchaikovsky completed two major works : his symphony No.4 and his opera Eugene Onegin. He then wrote to his publisher mentioning that he would like to compose something on a smaller scale as a means of relaxation and additional income, after such a big compositions. He wanted to write a piece "of interest to children, as Robert Schuman has done". He completed the Album for the Young (piano) in May 1878, two months after he began the work.

It is delightful music, originally consisting of 24 movements. James Curnow has arranged four of these movements as follows.
1. Morning Prayer
2. Winter Morning
3. Mama
4. Soldier's March

Based on the tune My Shepherd Will Supply My Need from the traditional work “Walker's Southern Harmony,” this sensitive and richly-scored setting provides a wonderful showcase for legato melodies and flowing counterlines. The piece builds gradually throughout, leading to the “maestoso” emotional peak. From there it winds down to a beautifully calm and peaceful close. Very effective! (4:35)

Sub-titled New Orleans, this suite sets out to recreate musically the joy of living that exists in the ‘deep south’ city nicknamed the ‘Big Easy’. The four movements are: ‘Mississippi Rag’ echoing the wonderful music of Scott Joplin. ‘Satchmo!’ which is a salute to the great Louis Armstrong. ‘Bourbon Street Blues’ a gentle interlude, nothing to do but relax. Finally ‘Mardi Gras’ a time for the city to erupt into colour, music and dance. Fun to play and fun to listen to!”
