The song, known in Norway as "Blåmann, Blåmann bukken min", is one of Norway’s best known children’s songs, and a clear case of art imitating life. The poem by A.O. Vinje was written in 1860, and is based on Vinje’s own experiences as a shepard boy. One of his favorite goats was even named Blåmann! The melody was composed by Anne Haavie, and first published in 1871.

A collection of four simple entertaining pieces which can be performed together or separately. (i) The Little March (ii) Tango Flamenco (iii) Childrens Waltz (iv) Happy Cha Cha.
On The Face! is a collection of material for beginner brass ensemble designed primarily for use in primary schools and music centres, aiming to give young players an introduction to the world of ensemble playing which is as varied and stimulating as possible. At the same time, however, the arrangements are fully tailored to take account of the special limitations of a brass player in the first stages of their development, and are scored so as to afford maximum flexibility to the teacher according to whatever forces might be at their disposal.
It is unlikely that the teacher would want to work through all the, material presented here with a single group: more usual would be to use three or four pieces as ongoing repertoire over the course of a term, or to select material as required for use in concerts, assemblies and the like.
While each piece offers its own challenges, those located towards the end of the book are somewhat more difficult and textured than the earlier ones. Rehearsals might start with the simpler pieces, adding more challenging ones as the group gains in confidence and fluency.
All pieces in On The Face! are written for a basic ensemble of two trumpet/ cornet parts and one bass part for trombone (or euphonium/baritone). These can be played one to a part, or doubled up as many times as desired.
To these may be added parts for any or all of the following:
E flat or F horn,
E flat tuba,
a higher tenor part (again for trombone/euphonium/baritone),
and basic drum kit.
In the conductor’s score book the main parts are printed in large staves, the optional ones in miniature staves.
As will be seen, the optional parts are nonetheless independent, adding considerably to the harmony and texture. However, the horn part and the higher tenor part duplicate each other to a certain degree, therefore the conductor may want to strengthen the main (bass) trombone part more than the higher one. The high trombone part should only be used when there is also a tuba in the ensemble.
