‘LOVE STORY’ is the 5th movement of the Suite ‘GALLERY,’ composed in Z015 to a commission by The Scottish Brass Band Association. Each movement refers to a picture, or pictures: this particular one relates to ‘Old Couple‘ by Caitriona Campbell. We see an aged married couple, hand in hand with their backs to the painter, walking away from her in a painting that is virtually a silhouette.
In this single movement edition, the tuned percussion is optional according to the availability of instruments. There are a few minimal alterations in the score compared to the original, but they change nothing of the pieces character
The whole Suite, lasting over 20 minutes, was premiered at the 2015 Scottish Open Brass Band Championship, held in Perth. In 2017, the Suite was again used, but in shortened form this time, at the British Brass Band Championships held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The complete work has been recorded by the CORY BAND conducted by Philip Harper, released in 2018 on The Art of Brass CD (DOY CD382).
