Song of the morning - duration 3.23 Making a living from composing music has never been an easy occupation and Elgar was forced to write a number of “salon” pieces in order to survive his “wilderness years” at the end of the nineteenth century. He lavished just as much care on these miniatures as he did in later years on his symphonies and oratorios and Chanson de Matin was one of a pair of attractive works sold for a pittance to a publisher in 1891. It is said that in his later years, after he had become a national figure, Elgar once passed a street violinist sawing away at one of these early pieces. Elgar is said to have tossed him a silver coin with the words “that’s more than I made out of it!”
