Flexible instrumentation - in basic four part harmony.
This publication ob Bach's 371 Four Part Chorales is based on the collection of Johann Sebastian bach's Choralgesange published by Johann Philipp Kirnberger and Carl Philipp Emanuel bach between 1984 & 1787.
Besides the original harmonization of J.S.Bach, this collection with over 300 pages contains a lot of useful information for the use of the chorales, such as 1. a biography of J.S. Bach 2. an explanation of the Church Year with accompanying index 3. an index of the chorales arranged according to the Church year. 4. alphabetical indexes of the chorales, with an English as well as a German version.
Not only can the four voiced hamonizations be performed by an organ or piano player, but they can serve as a score for other instrumentalists as well. They are transcribed in 19 separately available part books for a large number of instruments. Also, one or more combinations can perform the chorales accompanied by organ or piano. Because a large diversity of instrumentalists can make use of these chorales, the key is sometimes changed with respect to the original. Whenever the voice exceeds the instrument's range, the score books offer a suitable alternative. In both cases, the original harmonizations have not been altered.
