According to it's composer, Ashokan Farewell is "A Scottish lament written by a Jewish guy from the Bronx". Jay Ungar one of America's best known folk musicians, lived in the Bronx until he was 16. The "Farewell" was inspired by a series of musical workshops organised by his wife, Molly Mason at a camp located at Ashokan in the Catskill mountains, part of the Appalachians. It was composed in 1982 and adopted in 1990 as a signature tune for an American TV series, "The Cival War", which related to the history of America's bloodiest battle, which raged from 1861 until 1865. Ungar recieved a Grammy Award for his music.
